Cordouan Lighthouse (en.wikipedia.org)

I live a few kilometers away and it's a good reminder to go visit it again. I only went once when a child and don't have a lot of memories. 4h boat trip goes there for 50e. Reading about the wikipedia page, I now wonder if it was built on water (or closer to shore)

It is also a nice place to catch brown crabs and forage mussels and oysters during the low tide.

>> the lighthouse is something of a Renaissance masterpiece, drawing inspiration from Roman mausoleums, and the palaces, cathedrals, and forts of the Renaissance. Three stories were added in the 18th century.

So it was a Renaissance masterpiece, then it had three level of modern design bolted on top. It is a great lighthouse and an interesting bit of history, but an architectural turdunking.
